About this contributor

Inspired by the likes of CBC's David Wisdom, Leora Cornfeld, & Brent Bambury, Musique Plus and CHOM's Claude Rajotte, and CKUT's Lorrie Edmonds and Doug Ford, Omar has hosted HOOKED ON SONICS for "um, a while now...", earning the nicknames “Goodness” fondly from an industry promoter and “Crash” from a fellow DJ friend.

Omar has become an experienced broadcaster and interviewer and has had the priviledge of chatting with Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices), John Reis (Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes), Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs, Gutter Twins), Joan Jett, Scott Kanneberg (Pavement, Spiral Stairs), David Yow (Jesus Lizard, Qui), Blag Dhalia (the Dwarves), Nellie McKay, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow (the Posies), Brother Ali, Silversun Pickups (their first interview following the release of their debut EP, Pikul), Walter Schriefels (Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits), David Wisdom (legendary canadian broadcaster, ex-host of "NightLines" on CBC), and countless others.

Well regarded in the campus/community radio industry, Omar has trained many CJLO DJs, spoken on a panel at the CMJ Music Marathon, critiqued demos on the Songwriter’s Association of Canada’s Demo Derby at NXNE, and has also taken home the CMJ Award for Music Director of the Year in 2006 and 2008, and (ha ha), the CMJ Award for Sexiest Voice (Male) in 2006. Omar has most recently been invited to showcase "Hooked on Sonics" at the International Radio Festival in Zurich, Switzerland, where CJLO was the only station selected from Canada.

He also enjoys milkshakes, chocolate chip cookies, economics, pyrotechnics, and habitual line stepping...

Public Enemy
is one of three bands (the other two being Bad Religion and Fugazi) that had a pretty profound impact on me with regards to deciding to question the "system" and learn about what exactly was going on with respect to current events and politics in general.  I always found it hilarious to see PE head MC Chuck D being a guest on Ted Koppel's Nightline on ABC back in the day.  Probably the last vestige of the so-called Golden Era of Hip Hop before rap/hip hop's focus shifted towards the G-funk and gangsta rap of the early-to-mid '...
