Suoni Per Il Popolo, Montreal’s premier celebration of musical strangeness and the avant garde, brought (as always) a consortium of great acts to the stages of La Sala Rossa and Casa del Popolo this year. One of the premier events was the Constellation Records show headlined by your favourite experimental saxophonist and mine, Montreal adopted-son Colin Stetson. Stetson’s...

Over at Stereogum you can here the first single off of Fucked Up's upcoming album David Comes To Life. The song itself is entited 'The Other Shoe'.

I was late to the Fucked Up Party, only getting into them after The Chemistry of Modern Life came out and seeing them perform live at Sala. I was always into the blend of aggression/energy and melodicism they are able to put across without sounding forced.

If this new track is any indication, the new album is something for which to get excited. There is a huge amount of stuff going on filling up the stereo space (I listened through...

Anyone involved in home music production can relate to this. Driving is a great way to feel out your mixes.

This weekend the Foo Fighters played a secret club show (oooooh) in Santa Barbara, previewing their new album in entirety.

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYjaTOXWuWY&feature=player_embedded

The new album was tracked in Dave Grohl's garage entirely on analog gear. I'm intrigued by what is to come from the Foos after the last few years, which have been largely disappointing.

Burn To Shine is an interesting project conceived by Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty and a person named Christopher Green, who is a filmmaker about whom I know nothing.

The premise is to film bands performing in a house that is soon to be demolished. Each event is curated by a key musician from the local music scene in the community of the event, choosing home-grown acts to perform.

Here's a link to a clip of Tortoise from Volume 2 in Chicago. Each volume is for sale at the Trixie Film website

So I guess I should start blogging again... the powers that be are encouraging us all to do so. Thus I present to you this:
David Lynch is releasing a solo album. Of course he is. It's produced by Sparklehorse and a few others. There's another track kicking around as well, it's a bit darker. Craziness.

Bad Religion is one of the bands whose music was always in my non-Walkman-brand portable compact disc player when I was a suburb-living, black-t-shirt-wearing, skateboarding aspiring hooligan. When I learned that Bad Religion would play Montreal as part of the AUTUMN OF NOSTALGIA™ along with such bands as Millencolin, Anti-Flag, The Ataris, and...

Let me set the scene: it is Saturday, the fourth night of POP Montreal. The past three nights have been populated with at least one highly-entertaining show each. I roll out of bed at the civilized hour of 2:30 in the afternoon. Atari Teenage Riot is playing Foufounes Electrique at 10 p.m., one of the more hyped shows of the festival. With a passing knowledge of their music and reputation, I expect to be subjected to an intense experience.

Now, I understand that 'intense' can be an entirely subjective term. The show, however, most certainly delvered on...

Awesomely odd rap/rave group Die Antwoord go shopping at Amoeba Records in LA (which is, by all accounts, a good place to find oneself). I don't think their album has been released in North America quite yet, but from what I have heard (there are some tracks floating around) it is just as intense as you would guess.

Here's a decent article on the cover art for the new Black Keys album. I think the tunes are good indeed, but the design and packaging is top shelf. Cooper Black is a weird typeface in terms of its history and contemporary usage, but they nailed it on their cover.

From Stereogum:

Talk of a new Aphex Twin album started about this time last year, when Warp Records celebrated its 20th anniversary and label founder Steve Beckett went on record saying a new Aphex album would happen in a year or two. No album yet, but Richard James did bring out some new tracks in Metz, France on Friday while on a European DJ tour.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww...

That's right. It's gross. It's also not really a beard. But ask yourself as you take a gander at Lemmy Kilmister's facial decor if, even for one second, you give a damn about its beard semantics. That's right, you do not. Now, this is probably because you are distracted by those two whatever-they-are's on his cheek, but nevertheless, let us begin analysis:

There is only one thing you need to know about Lemmy Kilmister: balls. Lots of them. There are a few reasons Lemmy = balls. First and foremost, he is the most prominent...

Not really. But this is quite weird. Spotted this at BoingBoing today, an experimental LP called 'The Medium Is The Massage'. With some narration from McLuhan, some audio from a talk show appearance, and a bunch of extremely esoteric music, it is a weird experience indeed. Regular listeners will know that I am a communications major, so this is my cup of tea, lemmetellya. Listen here.

I know what you're thinking, but rest assured this is actually an interesting listen. Most of it is rehearsal takes for Bette's cover of 'Buckets of Rain' off 'Songs For The New Depression'. It's very interesting to hear Dylan's approach in the studio, working with other musicians.

-I have a mountain of homework to do at the end of the semester

-The university is closed, so I won't be coming in for class anyway

-Sometimes the computer need a chance to kick out the jams without my interference

I'll be back the week after, with some exciting new music to play. Seriously, it's exciting.

I take a break from essay-writing to write this: the new Besnard Lakes album is most good. Big songs, big guitars, but incredibly quiet and simple at times. To me, it kind of sounds like if the Pumpkins were a little more indie and a little less pompous (don't get me wrong, they did pompous well... until recently). Check it out if you have the time. After the jump find a sample from the album.

Found this the other day, and have been digging it with two trowels. Band is called Coloração Desbotada, EP is called 'Eu, eu mesmo e os vários beijos cafeinados.' They're a Brazilian shoegaze/punk band. Google it, and check out their MySpace here. Also, check out the new Beard Of The Week at CJLO's magazine page!

Trying to get back into the habit of blogging. Today's show was a bit of a smorgasbord, but I liked it. Little bit of Gonjasufi, litte Caribou remix, little Georgio Moroder, little Beach House, little Besmond Lakes... it was good. I'll probably post it up on the podomatic site on Wednesday, when I can get the recording from the station. Until then, check out some older episodes! Always good for the soul.

This week's beard comes recommended from none other than CJLO's own distinguished program director/host of The Phantastiq Cypha, Doc Holidae. When trying to sell me on this particular beard, the only thing he had to say was "neck beard." Yes, this week's edition is the premier of neck beards on BOTW!

This man is known as Freeway, and he raps the raps. He has rapped these raps in affiliation with Roc-A-Fella Records, and by extension Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel. In 2009, Freeway signed to Cash...

Unabridged will be at a CASE poetry and short story reading on Thursday, January 28th. Make sure to come down and listen to the fantastic authors or read your own material!

Hello good friends

Tonight's show was all about fantastic warm nice full immersive music. Some drone, some slow synth pop, some shoegaze. It was a great, speaker-seizure-inducing time. Please check out the playlist for some fantastic artists, especially Zikr, Tim Heckel and Aidan Baker & thisquietarmy. Some good Canadian talent and some good friends reside on tonight's tracklisting and , as always, independant music needs your support. Google them up and check out what they're up to. Heckel is on tour, I know, and if you live in the northeastern US check him out when he stops by your place of residence.

Thanks for reading/listening/being an audience to my media.

I'm blogging! I've never done this before!

If you didn't listen last week, that's too bad, but I'll tell you what happened. It was a noise rock show. Mostly. Also, for the first time ever I fell under my CanCon requirement. It was sad. Next week I shall make up for it!

This was fun. I will do it more.
