This week’s DJ of the week is bittersweet. Yaël Ossowski will be leaving CJLO to explore what the world has to offer and make his mark. We would like to thank him first and foremost for being a great addition to the station, working hard on a weekly basis to produce an amazing show and for being an all around great guy.
Yaël is a true believer in life, love, and above all, liberty. He has been staying true to those values while hosting his show, Liberty In Exile, for the last year. He describes his show as “caring and compassionate, bringing forth issues that maximize human freedom and seek to explore the fullest capabilities that individual liberty can grant.” A motivated young man who has always been intrigued by world around him, Yaël is truly inspired by those who take a look at their environment, challenge the status quo, and not only think for themselves, but seek to help others think outside the box.
A lot more could be said about Yaël Ossowski, but the best way to get to know him is to listen to Liberty In Exile and hear him for yourself. Catch the final two episodes on Friday December 10th and December 17th between 10 & 11am. Also, take a peek at his show page - http://www.cjlo.com/onair/liberty-exile and listen to past episodes.
Name: Annick
What is your DJ alias? & what are its origins? : MF Gold. Well it’s actually kinda silly, see my middle name is Marie-Laure, which is a French name, and when I was a kid I was trying to translate it for my English friends and I at that time I thought laure (as opposed to l’or) meant gold so I told people my middle name was mary-gold which just stuck with me for a while till I eventually turned into MF Gold
Show: Say Word!
Genre: Hip Hop Culture Talk Show
How long have you been at CJLO? : since April 2011
What is the best thing about working at CJLO? : Being part of a posse always gives you street cred and CJLO street cred is OG
Describe your show as a potential life partner. What are its qualities? : My show is so fun and spontaneous. It really loves life and discovering new cultures. It’s super opinionated but very open-minded. It loves the best music and always gives credit where credit is due, but mostly what I love about my show is that it loves me and soothes me when I’m frustrated, understands my rants and is always up for a good time.
Two reasons why you do your show?:
1) I love Life
2) I love sharing what I experience in Life
What do you think makes your show unique?: Our Talk Spots! Playing great music is only 10% of what we do at Say Word! .. Our talk spots really define Say Word because we really take the time to highlight local events, hot topics and artists so you can always be sure that you’ll learn something new from listening to Say Word!. Plus the Caity and MF Gold dynamic is totally one of a kind.
If you weren't doing your show, in what other ways would you express yourself?: I love to write, sing, dance, scream at shows, stalk people on fb, videoblog... Don’t worry I’d find someway to make my opinions heard.
What was the biggest turning point in your musical journey?: Well I’ve always loved many types of music and Hip-Hop was always a super big part of my life but I guess I must have been about 17 when I realized that even if I love lots of genres of music I want to live Hip-Hop for the rest of my life and I owe Tribe Called Quest, A-Rock, Nomadic Massive and the Vinyl dancefloor for that.
Fill In The Blanks:
If I could travel back in time and bring back anyone, I would bring back My Dad and Che Guevara. Because, They were both epic men who actually met each other and I would love to see their dynamic together
Name your 2 favorite albums of all time: I don’t do the whole all time thing cause I’m so one who changes a lot but they are a few albums that will always stick in my mind such as: No Doubt ‘Tragic Kingdom’, Jamiroquai ‘Travelling Without Moving’, Jay-Z ‘Reasonable Doubt’, Tribe Called Quest ‘ Midnight Marauders’ and recently Nomadic Massive ‘Nomad’s Land’, Obsesion ‘El Disco Negro’, The Narcicyst ‘The Narcicyst’ and DJ Jazzy Jeff & Ayah ‘Back for More’
What is the one piece of technology you cannot live without?: My Laptop
Describe yourself in 3 words: Fun, Loud, Intense
You may need: Adobe Flash Player.
DJ Jazzy Jeff Ayah - Back For More
You may need: Adobe Flash Player.
Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity
Name: Kelly Belfo
What is your DJ alias? & what are its origins? : Sugarface Nene (Nene means "Mommy" in the Ibo lauguage (Nigeria) and Sugarface was given to me by Raphael DJ 610 of Caribbean Callaloo)
Show: Beat The World
Genre: World
How long have you been at CJLO? : since 2003
What is the best thing about working at CJLO? : the music and the people
Describe your show as a potential life partner. What are its qualities? : I always looks forward to the time we spend together. It is supportive & reliable and I know where to find it (24/7).
Two reasons why you do your show?:
1) Creative expression
2) Discovering great music.
What do you think makes your show unique?: Beat The World is the only show on CJLO, even after 8 years, that travels all corners of the world. Furthermore, we travel deep into the roots and the rhythms of the music, namely with the drum. The drum is the essence if life. It runs through our viens!
If you weren't doing your show, in what other ways would you express yourself?: Play instruments, dance, and dj parties.
What was the biggest turning point in your musical journey?: I would constantly rewind the "mama say mama saa mama makossa" part in MJ's Starting Something when i was a pickney gal. I didnt realise it then but i was looping the sample. I wanted to hear it again and again. Secondly when i first discovered my dad's vinyl, I would play Led Zeppelin II, sit and listen to the trip.
Fill in the blanks
If I could travel back in time and bring back anyone, I would bring back my gedo (grandfather in Arabic). Because, he died when i was young so i never got to discover his talents. He painted and made instruments out of wood and metal. This way he could show me how to play them and teach me to make balawa the way no one else could.
Name your 2 favorite albums of all time: "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" Lauryn Hill & "Nevermind" Nirvana
What is the one piece of technology you cannot live without?: my stereo
Describe yourself in 3 words: passionate, traveler, courageous
Name: Melissa Mulligan
Show: Currently Concordia
Genre: News
How long have you been at CJLO? : For about a year and a half now I believe.
What is the best thing about working at CJLO? : Definitely the limitless learning opportunities the station provides for students. I go to the station, I’m all, “Hey, I wanna be a news producer.” They’re like, “Let’s teach you how to use the soundboard.” I say, “Wait, I also wanna be a famous DJ.” They say, “Cool, here’s an application, let me show you how the DJ booth works.” Also, they have a super sweet crew of people in the office you get to annoy every time you stop by the station.
Describe your show as a potential life partner. What are its qualities? : Um, I’d have to say that my show is already EXACTLY like my desired life partner. Smart, witty, full of incredibly interesting stories and experiences, sometimes a bit awkward, but overall fun, engaging and totally enjoyable to spend time with. My only qualm is that we only see each other one hour a week (11am-noon on Fridays).
Two reasons why you do your show? :
1) Because I have an inherent desire to provide interesting and entertaining media content for the people of the world/Concordia University (which I hope my show will succeed in providing) AND
2) Because I love hearing the sound of my own voice. Sue me.
What do you think makes your show? : What “Makes” my show? Hmmm…Interesting question. Like I guess audio frequencies and lots of wires.....no but seriously. I think that what really “makes” the show is the amazing collaboration between the incredible crew of people we have involved with Currently Concordia. Since we have a beautiful diversity of segments, we also have a group that reflects this diversity. Every person involved brings a fresh and unique element to the show’s content and production, and this is what I think distinguishes us from other programs.
If you weren't doing your show, in what other ways would you express yourself? : I.E. Painter, Soapbox on Ste Catherine etc…
You know, I’ve asked myself, “What obligations could I complete if I just took the time that I invest in Currently Concordia and directed its use elsewhere?” But honestly, the reality is that I would probably just spend those hours dancing in front of my mirror like I do the other 5 hours a day that I don’t have class. Or else I’d be mentally preparing myself for an EPIC rap battle that I have always believed will take place between me and a famous rapper one day at a party. That way, I can school the rapper, win eternal street cred, and then right after I bust my last rhyme, I’ll bust a supa sweet move.
What was the biggest turning point in your musical journey? : When all of my iTunes got erased in the 10th grade. 3000 songs gone in the blink of an eye. I tried to download them all again but realized that I didn’t remember a lot of the artists and songs I had. I started to listen to a bunch of new songs and artists that I had never heard before that were recommended online as being similar to my existing tastes in music. That’s when I really started developing my musical taste buds, and in doing so, I stumbled upon countless new genres and artists that I found to be delicious.
If I could travel back in time and bring back anyone, I would bring back :Shakespeare.
Often in my school essays I try to employ “words” that should be actual words in the English language, but aren’t recognized as such. For example, a Prof took a point off of an essay I wrote because I used the word “Performative.” It was literally the ONLY word that worked in the context of the sentence, and I was appalled to discover that it wasn’t actually a word in the dictionary (although dictionary.com totally has it). I would take Shakespeare to my class, have him explain how he personally “made-up” thousands of now legitimate words out of linguistic necessity, and demand that the Professor restore my deducted point.
Name your 2 favorite albums of all time:
Off the top of my head, “Absolution” by “Muse”… that was my teen angst album for a while there. And “Word of Mouf” by “Ludacris”…. This was the first rap CD I ever owned, I was ten years old I think, and I had the censored version. But I totally knew and added in all the missing swear words, like a rebel.
What is the one piece of technology you cannot live without? : I guess the best answer would be Electricity. I have bad eyesight as it is and candle wax hurts. But if you want a more “contemporary” example, I’d have to say my computer. Just because it has the capacity of multiple technologies. I can write, read, photograph, paint, message and call people, I can even use it as a giant lightbulb when my electricity goes out. That is until the battery dies….then I revert to my initial answer.
Describe yourself in 3 words:
Hilariously Hyperactive Enthusiast
Name: Robin Fisher
What is your DJ alias? & what are its origins?: Cartoongal. My show is about the graphic arts, cartoons are a graphic art. The main mandate of my show is to make the graphic arts accessible to all people. I like to say, "let me be your guide, let me be your cartoongal." (You know, like your gal Friday.)
Show: The Onomatopoeia Show
Genre: "All graphic arts, all the time." Talk radio with music.
How long have you been at CJLO?: 3 years.
What is the best thing about working at CJLO?: The sense of community and the opportunity to reach an extremely wide audience with very little censorship.
Describe your show as a potential life partner. What are its qualities? Omg! My boyfriend is extremely dreamy! He has such great taste in music, soooooooo much variety. One time he made me a mix tape of all tunes from WWII. Another time he played underground Japanese bands all night. And he reads Everything! Like one week he's scouring a book on fashion illustration and then like today, he wouldn't stop talking about this book called "Who censored Roger Rabbit?" Did you know that was a book and a cartoon/live action movie? Sometimes he brings his friends. Artists, animators, writers, he knows tons of interesting people. He loves talking about Female comicbook artists, kids books, one time he ranted about how various action figures are modern sculpture. He totally loves cartoons and graffiti........sigh, I could listen to him even on a Sunday. He's just So enthusiastic, he's contagious. It never fails, whatever he's talking about, you want to read it, he makes it sound so appealing and fun.
Two reasons why you do your show?:
A. I consider myself a comic book activist and am compelled to make the world realize that there are comics out there for everyone. That the simple amalgamation of art and literature, elevates the art form to more than anyone could ever imagine.
B. I listen to a lot of music and read a lot of things. I can't stop sharing and am freakishly enthusiastic about the good non mainstream stuff. Which makes me an ideal radio show host for a show about the graphic arts at a university radio station.
If you weren't doing your show, in what other ways would you express yourself?: Through writing articles about comic books, etc. Possibly with twitter or a website.
What was the biggest turning point in your musical journey?: Jeepers, I don't think I've ever had a musical journey. How about what got me started in radio? Doing an hour long Canadian Content show at Lake State University (Sault Ste Marie, USA) circa 1994/95. Musically I've always listened to things that are not the mainstream and I relish the chance to play music people might not have heard before. So I strive to find the best of the non mainstream.
Fill in the blanks
If I could travel back in time and bring back anyone, I would bring back Jim Henson. Because he created a new art form (The marriage of marionettes and puppets = Muppets) and because he made generations of millions and trillions of people, all over the world, happy.
Name your 2 favorite albums of all time: While I love music, my show is about comics. My favourite comic of all time is Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children. Currently, I'm in love with "Mouseguard" by David Petersen and "King City" by Brandon Graham
What is the one piece of technology you cannot live without?: The combustion engine.
Describe yourself in 3 words: enthusiastic, educator & open-minded.
What is your DJ alias? & what are its origins?
Cecil. It's honestly just a misunderstanding of my real name.
What is your show name?
Burnt Offerings
What genre?
The metal-est!
How long have you been at CJLO?
Probably 4 or 5 years now.
What is the best thing about working at CJLO?
It's a lot of fun and I enjoy the people I work with!
Describe your show as a potential life partner. What are its qualities?
It's always there when I need it (or even when I don't). It's never left me, never lied to me, never stole from me and never talks back to me. Unfortunately, it also means that it's a terrible conversation partner!
Two reasons you host a show
1) I love the music I play.
2) I've connected with so many great and interesting people!
What do you think makes your show unique?
It's hard to say.... There are so many great shows with so many great DJs that put a lot of their own work into them. So I guess what makes my show unique is the fact that mine is probably the only one that praises Greek gods constantly throughout.
If you weren't doing your show, in what other ways would you express yourself?
I'd probably be writing an online journal on some dinky website.
What was the biggest turning point in your musical journey?
Probably was when I started getting asked to do live band interviews. I knew then that my show had started taking a much more serious turn and that I had to keep working hard because it was paying off.
Fill in the blanks
If I could travel back in time and bring back anyone, I would bring back Dimebag Darrell. Because his death was not only a blow to the metal world, but because his death caused a lot of panic and worry amongst many bands while touring.
What are your 2 favorite albums of all time?
Iced Earth's The Dark Saga and Symphony X's Paradise Lost.

What genre?
Mainly Alternative, punk, hardcore and more
How long have you been at CJLO?
4 years
What is the best thing about working at CJLO?
This is a loaded question... but I must say it is the underground music that I have really got to know and of course the CJLO crew!
Describe your show as a potential life partner. What are its qualities?
My new show is going to focus on music of the Commonwealth. Each country produces amazing music and I truly wanted to focus on it. Also I love ranting about a particular new subject that has pissed me off, looking for and broadcasting new music news, informing the public about great concerts in the city, as well as what fun there is to do in the city. I can't forgot to mention that I love to end my show with a chat with Nassim!
Two reasons you host a show
1) To gain broadcasting experience
2) and my dual love of talking and music!
What do you think makes your show unique?
The fact that I don't just stick to one genre of music, but I make sure that all of the music, regardless of genre, is music of the commonwealth. I can't stress enough, how much I love the commonwealth countries and the phenomenal music they produce. I will do my best to promote the wonderful talent they each have.
If you weren't doing your show, in what other ways would you express yourself?
Mother, Radio Producer, Actress, Dancer and Partier!
What was the biggest turning point in your musical journey?
Meeting famous radio DJ's Scruff Connors and John Gallagher.

Straight to the point, when Abby started at CJLO some of us thought she was a little.... eccentric, but we all loved her. She helped on the news team, cohosted and then began her own weekly show and was an all around great volunteer. It was almost kismet when Abby applied for the Volunteer Coordinator. She helped organize and guide other members of CJLO in finding task to help the station run smoother. But enough from us, let's see what eccentric answers Abby had for the DJ Of The Week Questionnaire.
What is your DJ alias? & what are its origins?
I am pretty sure I am the dj with the most Alias's/dj names. People just enjoy labelling me I guess, or maybe I have a personality disorder and I don't know who I am. Or I'm indecisive or something, I don't know..what do you think, am I right.
Schachter the Reaktor - Nickname I got in college because I broke a Mac computer on my first day of digital design. The I.t.t guy literally wheeled it away on a trolley and I had no computer for the remainder of class.
Stabby Abby - I don't do that anymore. There is even a Gazette article that quotes me saying that.
Shankin Schachter - CJLO' s Program Director, Brian Joseph came up with that one, I like it's classier than stabby and I feel the need to say it with a cockney accent!
Starr-Girl - Another DJ called me that because I tend to zone out sometimes, especially when I am near a window or listening to music. As a kid Teachers had to keep me away from 'distracting windows'
Dj Melting Starr -It's my dj name for the new show The Meltdown. Kind of explains itself. We melt and so do stars.
Dj Busy Beez- some friends of mine call me B or Beez as a nickname and during exam time at school I become busy Beez a girl on the verge of a breakdown!
What is your show name?
The Reaktor.
What genre?
It's a shizophrenic show that showcases local talent. It's a bit of everything. I play what is new,fun and what the listeners want to hear or what I think they would like whether it is rpm, rock, metal, punk, indie or the occasional hip hop track!
How long have you been at CJLO?
Three crazy lovable years
What is the best thing about working at CJLO?
The Music and the peoples and the fact that we are an underground station, we give local talent the opportunity to be heard on the airwaves and are exposed to the most amazing music and shows.
Describe your show as a potential life partner. What are its qualities?
It's moody, upbeat, offbeat, fun, reliable, energetic with a hint of mental illness.
Two reasons you host a show
1) I love talking and I love talking about music and expressing my opinion on the airwaves!
2) One of the best parts of hosting is discovering new music and doing live sets/interviews with up and coming bands!
What do you think makes your show unique?
I play as much music as possible, and I take requests. If you call me and request a song I will do my best to play it. My show is also very music oriented I don't spend an hour talking about my day, nobody cares about that. I talk about events and music and have a random complaint about STM now and then! Also I love showcasing local talent. So if you're in a band and want some publicity or promo, just be nice and e-mail me.
If you weren't doing your show, in what other ways would you express yourself?
I'd probably stand outside on a box with a mega phone and pretend to be broadcasting on the air.
What was the biggest turning point in your musical journey?
Discovering how awesome Can-Con is. No joke, Canadian music get's a bad rep and prior to coming to CJLO I thought most Can Con was horrible and I only knew of Tegan and Sara. Now if you ask me to name five Canadian bands off the top of my head that I love, I could name at least twenty that I think are amazing.
Fill in the blanks
If I could travel back in time and bring back anyone, I would bring back Freddy Mercury. Because He is my favorite singer/musician /artist of all time and I would love to interview him and talk about authenticity in music and how important originality is in music. Plus I'd think he'd be a fun dinner./concert/party mate!
What are your 2 favorite albums of all time?
Fleetwood Mac: Rumours
The Clash : London Calling
I know I'm adding this but I must!!
Fav album of this year =Janelle Monae Arch Android.
What is the one piece of technology you cannot live without?

Describe yourself in 3 words:
Bubbly, Entertaining, Bacon-Lover

Getting to meet a lot of amazing new people and being a part of helping the station grow.
Describe your CJLO as a potential life partner. What are its qualities?
Independent and scrappy, but sweet and easygoing at the same time.
Two reasons you host a show
1) I think community radio is extremely important for giving a voice to the voiceless, especially in our political climate today
2) I freakin’ love making radio, hearing radio, and encouraging others to make radio.
What do you think makes your station unique?
We’re on the AM dial, it gives us a unique sound.

Someone Saved My Life Tonight - Elton John
We could try and write something funny about this week's DJ of the week, maybe even tell you all the embarrasing behind the scene stories and inside jokes (gauntlets and goblets anyone). Instead we thought it best to just let you get to know them through their questionnaire.
Without futher ado, this week's DJ of the Week; host of Charts & Crafts: Erica "Ricky Fish" Fisher
---
What is your DJ alias? & what are its origins?
I don't have an alias per se, but the name Ricky Fish (coined by Program Director Brian Joseph) has made it's way around the station. I even changed it to Ricky Minaj, sometimes Busty Rhymes as my rap alias. When I`m feeling Irish I'm Ricky Fitz.
What is your show name?
Charts & Crafts
What genre?
Whatever's charting that week!
How long have you been at CJLO?
Since January 2010. I started as a news reader before becoming Director in August.
What is the best thing about working at CJLO?
The perks, you know, free shows, networking to get into more free shows. Forcing people to listen to me talk for a few hours every week doesn't hurt either. Also, I get to rant about the Canucks all I want!
Describe your show as a potential life partner. What are its qualities?
Charts & Crafts has a bit of a, shall we say, shady past. It's been through many partners, sometimes for just a short period of time. However, Charts & Crafts is a loyal partner, and I know it will always be there for me. Charts & Crafts keeps me in line, doesn't let me stray too much while giving me room to breath, and I need that sort of discipline in a partner.
Two reasons you host a show
1) To get more on air experience
2) To force people to have to listen to me (or at least let me think they are)
What do you think makes your show unique?
Every show is different. Since the music changes every week, I never know what to expect and neither do the listeners. Since I talk every 3 songs or so, a lot also depends on myself and what I'm doing/feeling this week. The show can stray from show reviews to 7 minutes political rants over the Tron soundtrack.
If you weren't doing your show, in what other ways would you express yourself?
Through my photography. I've been a photographer for over 7 years now. Either that, or start crashing movie sets to be an extra in the most movies ever.
What was the biggest turning point in your musical journey?
No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom. I remember seeing the album pamphlet at my friend's house. It was her older sister's, and I thought she was pretty cool, so I went out and bought it for myself. Before that my music came from my parents: Eric Clapton, 54-40, ZZ Top. This started my love to go out and find new music for myself.
Fill in the blanks
If I could travel back in time and bring back anyone, I would bring back Selena. Because she still had so much to give.
What are your 2 favourite albums of all time?
No Doubt – Tragic Kingdom & Dr. Dre – Chronic 2001
What is the one piece of technology you cannot live without?
My Blackberry; it's everything! It's how I settle arguments, figure out how to bus everywhere, flirt with cute boys and send my news stories on the go. Plus it would be a temporary replacement for my iPod and camera.
Describe yourself in 3 words: loyal, sarcastic, foxy
You may need: Adobe Flash Player.
No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom - Just a Girl
You may need: Adobe Flash Player.
Dr. Dre - Chronic 2001 - Still D.R.E.
